National Watermelon Day: Health Benefits of Watermelon

August 3, 2018 — Tamara Castellano

In honor of National Watermelon Day (yes, that is actually a thing), we thought we’d share a little information about the health benefits of watermelon, along with a simple recipe you can pair with just about anything.

Watermelon keeps you hydrated.

Watermelon is 92% water.  The high volume of water makes you feel full and also helps keep your digestive track moving.

It’s high in lycopene.

Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant.  Research has shown the lycopene may help lower your risk for certain types of cancer and has been shown to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

May help to reduce inflammation.

Watermelon contains two amino acids called L-arginine and L-citrulline.  These aminos can help reduct systemic inflammation, which can lead to things like diabetes and heart disease.

Here is an easy-to-make recipe that can pair with just about anything.

Watermelon and feta salad with basil

Ingredients

  • One seedless watermelon
  • Feta cheese
  • Basil leaves

Directions

  • Chill the watermelon for at least a couple of hours before preparing the salad.
  • Cut the watermelon into bite-sized cubes and place into a large mixing bowl
  • Crumble 1/4 to 1/4 cup of feta and combine with the watermelon
  • Finely chop the basil leaves and toss on the salad
  • Optional:  You can add a little olive oil and/or salt.  You can also add in tomatoes

Pair this salad with a grilled steak chicken.  You can also make it a day ahead, but keep it stored in an air tight container in the refrigerator.
