Your Heart, Your Health

February 3, 2025 — Jill Lanagan

February is a natural time for people to think about their Heart because of Valentine’s Day. We don’t always think of self-love as a very important part of our overall health. Mind, body, and emotional health all depend on the body being in it’s  best shape and a very big part of that is, of course, your heart health!  Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. There are well known causes that will increase your risk of getting it.

Having high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes all put us at higher risk. Being overweight or not getting enough physical activity, as well as not eating a healthy diet, and of course smoking! In fact, quitting smoking or using smokeless tobacco is still one of the best things you can do for your heart, your health, and yourself! Stay away from secondhand smoke as much as possible especially if you have already been a smoker.  Smoking can actually change your blood chemistry which leads to plaque in the major blood vessels!

The good news is there’s plenty to do to help your heart as well. Here are a few to get you started besides quitting your smoking habits.

  • STAY ACTIVE – This helps control weight and reduces chances of developing other conditions that may put a strain on the heart.
  • DON’T LET STRESS OVERWHELM YOU – Everyone has stress but do your best not to use overeating, drinking ,or smoking to cope. Physical activity, relaxation exercises, or meditation can improve emotional health.
  • CONTROL BLOOD SUGAR- Over time high blood sugar can damage blood vessels and the nerves that control your heart.
  • DON’T SKIMP ON SLEEP – Shorting yourself on sleep gives you a higher risk of obesity, high blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes, and depression!
  • MONITOR YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE- High blood pressure greatly increases the risk of heart attack. Try to keep numbers below 120/88 mm hg.

It is important to remember that you don’t have to change your entire lifestyle all at once. Make small changes and keep at it even if you backslide now and then. Happy “HEART” Day to you!
