March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: Time to Get Screened!

March 3, 2025 — Tonya Hayes

At Iron Road Healthcare, we believe in the power of prevention. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month—a time to shed light on one of the most preventable yet deadly cancers. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., but with regular screenings, it can often be detected early or even prevented altogether.

Why Colorectal Screening Matters

Colorectal cancer develops from abnormal growths, called polyps, in the colon or rectum. These polyps can become cancerous over time, but screenings can catch and remove them before they turn into a serious threat. Early detection is key—when found in its early stages, colorectal cancer has a 90% survival rate.

Who Should Get Screened?

If you are 45 or older, it’s time to schedule your first colorectal cancer screening.

If you have a family history of colorectal cancer or other risk factors, talk to your doctor about getting screened earlier.

Even if you feel healthy, screenings are essential—most colorectal cancers develop with no symptoms in the early stages.

Screenings are FREE for Iron Road Healthcare Members

We are committed to your health. Iron Road Healthcare covers recommended colorectal cancer screenings at no cost to eligible members. That means there’s no financial barrier to taking care of your health. Don’t wait—early detection saves lives!

What Screening Options Are Available?

There are multiple ways to screen for colorectal cancer:

Colonoscopy (the gold standard, allowing for both detection and removal of polyps)

Stool-based tests (non-invasive and done at home, but may require follow-up testing)

Talk to your doctor about which option is best for you.

March is the perfect time to prioritize your health. If you’re due for a screening, schedule one today. Encourage your friends and family to do the same—your reminder could save a life.
